It’s hard to imagine that the opening shot of The Shining is an example of people reading subtext into something benign. Sure, there are times people give meaning to just another pretty shot, but Judgements on execution aside - the film is a moment by moment study in heavy handed visual subtext. In a film where a significant number of shots reflect a warped point of view, it’s likely the very first image was carefully planned to introduce and support the film’s language of distorted cinematography.

That said, who knows?
